Hi wakkoguy
Locked cells (the default) have no effect until you apply Worksheet Protection. Simply go to Tools>Protection>Protect Sheet and apply a different password than the one used to Protect the Workbook.

but is there a way just to protect one cell? for say a formula?
-
Yes, unlock all cells, then lock the one cell and protect the sheet.

wakkoguy,
Excel 2002 + also has a funky feature which allows you to set ranges that can be edited when the sheet is protected if a password is supplied.
ie.
You can set a general sheet protection password which only you know .(warning: all sheet protection passwords are defenseless against medium - advanced users)
You can then assign differnt passwords that allow specifiec ranges to be edited by a user. You can find this utility under Tools - Protection - Allow users to edit ranges. This is quite a handy feature to restrict multi level users but be warned - it will only keep out the honest people.
