Special Validation List

Re: Special Validation List
I'm not sure whether this is possible just through a validation list...
Are you able to have an unused row and then just hide it? If so, you might be able to accomplish through VBA...my idea would be to check each cell in the column/row for bold...something likeCodeSheet("Sheet name here").Columns(List Column #).ClearContents LastRow=Sheet("Sheet name here").Cells(Rows.Count, Appropriate columns here).End(xlUp).Row For iRow=1 To LastRow If Sheet.Cell(iRow, Column).Font.Bold=True Then Sheet.Cell(iRow, Column).Copy Sheet.Cell(1, Other Column) End If Next
And then make your validation list that Column. I'm not sure about how to trigger it though and whether a change event would capture changing it to bold or not...
Let me know if that code makes any sense to you and or if it put you down the right path, it is very early over here in Deutschland! -
Re: Special Validation List
Quote from Ben2;678543Validation list of changing names only bold names to be active but non-bold names to stay visible.
Sorry, I might need to make this clearer:
Also, maybe a combo box would work better;
A Validation list of peoples names, the list keeps changing in content and in length, some of the names are in bold type and they need to be active, other names are not bold and do not need to be active but still need to be visible in the list. Grateful for your advice. -
Re: Special Validation List
A Validation List will only display what is in it. It will not reflect Bold formatting.
What do you mean by active?
-
Re: Special Validation List
I'm in the same boat as Roy at the moment. I had assumed active meant it would appear in the list and if not active it would not appear in the list!

Re: Special Validation List
Active is supposed to mean that if It is clicked it will appear in the cell and not active is when it is seen on the list but when clicked will not appear in the cell. Thanks.

Re: Special Validation List
Data Validation will not work like that
-
Re: Special Validation List
I suspected that data validation might not work and suggested in my first reply that a combo box may be the answer instead but I do not have that skill or experience so I'm open to other ideas. Thanks

Re: Special Validation List
I doubt if you can do that with a ComboBox. You cannot format entries in a ComboBox

Re: Special Validation List
What about two lists in a combo box, one of which acts as a validation list and the other (in the next column) which can only be read.
I really need to view only a full list and then also have a sub list which has to be a normal validation. Both displayed together.
Thanks once more for your efforts. -

Re: Special Validation List
Attach an example workbook.

Re: Special Validation List
Main List Sub List
A A
B C
C
Two columns to show in Combo Box. Items only from Sub List can be selected as items from Main List are for reference only. -
Re: Special Validation List
You can use a ComboBox with some VBA or Data validation & VLOOKUP.
With Data Validation selecting from the list a VLOOKUP formula would show any associated value in the next cell. Lock that cell & protect the sheet to prevent anyone accessing that result.

Re: Special Validation List
Sorry but the formatting seems to have failed in my last post so it has given the wrong impression.
Main list should show A B C, while Sub list should show A C (both in alphabetical order and (Main List, Sub List) will show in order (A,A) (B,C) (C, ) and so on).
Main list needs to be seen in the combo box first column while Sub list should show in combo box second column.
Combo box first column to be visible but not validate but combo box second column needs to validate when an item is selected from its list.
Hope you have the patience for one more attempt please. Grateful for the help.
