matching similar parts

    I am trying to match similar numbers between two different worksheets. Ideally I would like to place an "x" to show what sheet has that part.
    I have attached a sample of what I am trying to do. Column "a" has a list of part numbers that appear on both sheet 2 and 3, ( marked 9a-12 and 9av-12). Cell B3 and C3 have the titles of sheets 2 and 3 respectively. I know how to use vlookup to place that number where it is used, as shown in cell b4, but I would like to leave an "x" in those cells instead. Can anyone give any hints on how to accomplish this.

    you could use an IF around your lookup


    so if vlookup cannot find the value it returns an error


    so iserror(vlookup(....) )
    will return true if it cannot find the value


    so in an IF


    =IF( iserror(vlookup(....)), "", "X")
    puts an X if found and leaves blank if not found

    sheet 'SIMILAR PARTS' cell B4 "=IFERROR(IF(VLOOKUP($A4,'9a-12'!$B$1:$J$139,1,0)=$A4,"X",""),"")" cell C4 "=IFERROR(IF(VLOOKUP($A4,'9av-12'!$B$1:$J$142,1,0)=$A4,"X",""),"")" and fill down.
