Keeping field order the same in pivot table

  • I'm relatively new to pivot tables and I apologise if the wording of this is a little amateur.

I have a table with two columns: 'Serial' and 'Read Date'. The table represents all those serials that failed to read at a certain time and date. For example:

    Serial Read Date
    4028543 10am Dec 16
    4028544 10am Dec 16
    4028566 10am Dec 16
    4028567 11am Dec 16
    4028577 11am Dec 16
    4028609 11am Dec 16
    4028626 12pm Dec 16
    4028668 12pm Dec 16
    4028669 12pm Dec 16
    4028788 9am Dec 17
    4028796 9am Dec 17
    4028802 11am Dec 17
    4028804 12pm Dec 17
    4028805 1pm Dec 17
    4028817 2pm Dec 18

I want to create a pivot table that looks like this:

    10am Dec16 11am Dec 16 12pm Dec 16 9am Dec 17 10am Dec 17 11am Dec 17 12pm Dec 17 1pm Dec 17 2pm Dec 17
    4028543 1
    4028544 1
    4028566 1
    4028567 1
    4028577 1
    4028609 1
    4028626 1
    4028668 1
    4028669 1
    4028788 1
    4028796 1
    etc

the problem is the columns are sorting in numeric order. So I'm getting

    10am Dec16 10am Dec 17 10am Dec 18 ... 11am Dec 16 11am Dec 17 11am Dec 18 ... 12pm Dec 16 etc
    4028543
    4028544
    4028566
    4028567
    4028577
    4028609
    4028626
    4028668
    4028669
    4028788
    4028796
    etc

I know you can move them manually but I have 73 reads so far and that's a lot of manually moving columns about.

I'd like to get Excel to use the original order of the Read date entries.

    I'm grateful for any advice
