Hi, I was trying to change some VBA code in a workbook this morning when it crashed and now I can't open the workbook at all. Initially there was a recovery option when I tried to reopen it but this has now been replaced with a more modern recovery file which is useless. I've tried various free recovery programs but to no avail. I'm not too bothered about recovering all my VBA and stuff as I can rewrite that but I could really do with saving the data if that's at all possible. It's a huge worksheet and I would like to have not lost all the work I've put into it if possible.

Re: How To Recover A Corrupted 2007 Workbook
If your file was a .xlsm or .xlsx file, this might work.
Find the file in the folder and change the name from filename.xlsm to filename.zip. Windows will ask to make sure, but do it anyway. Then, open the zip file by double-clicking on it and go through the folders until you find your worksheet XML files (probably in the filemane.zip\xl\worksheets folder). Here you will find the data for your worksheets. You can double-click on the XML file, and it might open up in Internet Explorer or whatever program is your default for viewing XML data. From there, you have the data, but you will have to parse through it to figure out how to put it into a new worksheet to get it back into where you need.
If you go this route, when you are done modifying the files in the zip folder, go back out to rename the zip back to .xlsm. Open with Excel as normal, and see if this helps.
If your worksheet wasn't the corrupted piece, you might try to create a new Excel file that has a sheet named the same as your lost data. Repeat the process of changing the name to zip to find its worksheets in the zip file. Delete the sheet you need, and copy the sheet of the corrupted data into this file. Rename the zip back to .xlsx, and open the file. I just tried this, and Excel complained a little, but most of the data was there. If this doesn't work, you'll have to work with the XML file from above.

mmmr, does the file contain confidential information? if not, would it be possible to post the file itself?

Sometimes a file will open using Open Office.

Re: How To Recover A Corrupted 2007 Workbook
Unfortunately the spreadsheet does contain confidential information. It is my work record for my company for the last 5 years and contains account details, passwords etc as well as daily operations. I've tried open office and that didn't work either. I've also tried the Microsoft Excel Recovery program that did work but it said that I'd have to purchase the full version to save the results and I simply don't have the cash for this at the moment. I was hoping someone could recommend a free recovery software program. I've tried a few but none have been successful. I've got a backup of the spreadsheet that works from Nov 2013 and so I'm gradually piecing things together again from that. On the plus side, I've started rewriting the spreadsheet from scratch and the very first macro I wrote was to save the workbook with a timestamp to a new folder and re-open the saved original so at least if this happens again I won't have a repeat of my situation. The lesson learned here for me is that I should backup more often. Doh!... it's my own fault

If you haven't seen this article, it might be worth a try http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/10-things…excel-workbook/
Also, try importing the file into a different software (e.g., Access) - that might not be ideal, but sometimes works. Hope you figure it out!

Funnily enough, this is one of the pages I looked at trying to solve the problem. I've now purchased a license for Excel Repair Toolbox and it's running as we speak. I'll post how well it deals with it on here in case someone else has the same problem. It cost me about £23 which is reasonable considering the amount of time that it'd take me to plow through invoices and receipts to get everything as it was.

Re: How To Recover A Corrupted 2007 Workbook
I tried Excel Repair Toolbox but had a problem with it and couldn't get it to work. It may be my computer as the one with Excel on it is Windows XP 64 bit which doesn't run much software or hardware. However, I emailed the team and they were very supportive. In the end I went to all the sites that had passwords stored for them and changed them and then emailed the support team the file. They've recovered it for me so I'm happy with the purchase. They recommended I uninstall and reinstall their software but I now have the recovered file and see no need. Hope this comes across as positive for Excel Repair Toolbox as, in the end, the result was the same, I got my spreadsheet baclk
