What Book to buy?

  • Gday All

Ok I need help with deciding what book to buy to help me program in excel VBA?

I went to the book shop today and there are so many but I don’t know if they are going to be helpful enough for myself.

I want a book that will help me program in macros and have a list of functions?

So what type of books do you all have? And what’s good about them? What do they have that is useful?

I am more interested in a book that is about excel VBA scripting, macros and not so much on graphics. I want the book to have a list of functions that explain what they do and worked examples.

I know forums have their own books but I need to know more because I thought I knew what book to buy but going down to the book shop I got lost and didn’t know which book to buy.

    Cheers,

  • Look for books on VBA PowerProgramming by John Walkenbach. I found his books to be extremely easy to use and comprehend.

  • keep reading the posts on this forum and check out Dave's book store .There are other posts on this matter as well so use the Search facility and you will find lots of comments on various books.

Dave has written a very good all round Excel Book - Excel Hacks.

I'll second that. John's book get's you started with some useful examples and his code & explanations are clear.

Excel 2002 VBA Programmers Reference by John Green et al.

I have the 2000 version & found it a useful reference tool.

Since WillR has seconded Walkenbach's Power Programming book, I'll put in my two cents worth for Walkenbach's formulas book. It has a nice variety of applications of formulas.

Dave's Excel Hacks is an awesome book for any level of user. He explains things as clearly as I have ever seen. The way that the book is laid out makes it easy to pop around to what you need when you need it.

  • Walkenbach's formula book is a super reference tool, but if you want a fast-action text that quickly spells out the nuts and bolts of programming in Excel, I recommend The "Excel Programming Weekend Crash Course" by Peter Aitken. I have experience in other languages, so I understand this book with no problem, but I think it would be good even if you are not a programmer. Even with experience, I find myself at a loss often with this new operating system (Windows) and Excel. The structure, syntax, and control structures of Excel VBA are clearly and concisely spit out. It's been a real help to me. Speaking of which, I have so many questions about how to get things done in Windows 2000. Example: How do I simply list a directory's contents AND PIPE TO THE PRINTER? Simple things like this have my hands tied. I need a good book on SysAdmin in Windows. Any Ideas? And good luck with your Excel programming....

  • P.S. I concur wth all of the above, especially Walkenback for getting started in VBA. But I also wanted to mention (because I dodn't see it above -- maybe I missed it) that Walkenback's "Power Programming" text comes with a CD that has lots of great example .xls files that parallel the text and have the example VBA code available.

Good point thomach; the CD is a great resource. His Power Utility Pak is very handy as well. If you purchase it, you can send in a fee to get the password that let's you see the source code for all of the utilities. If you are just starting out, this can be a very good way to see how things work together as well.
