Disabling automatic conversion of X-X copied data into date in Excel

  • Hi

I am facing a problem with 'cut & paste' data. Say I am copying Kobe Bryan's 02-03 season game log (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/…d=3118&sYear=2002&sType=2) and pasting them onto Excel spreadsheet. You will notice that under the columns FG, 3P and FT (where the information is stored as X-X) the pasted numbers automatically get converted to dates. Now obviously I do not want them to be converted to dates. Is there any way I can do to retain the original data in X-X form? The problem exists no matter I paste the data as HTML, Unicode or text.

    Many thanks in advance!

Not an exact answer to your question, but this can be a good workaround...

    See if it helps you.

Try importing the webpage as data -> get external data -> New Web Query:
    1. Enter the url
    2. select tables only
    3. select full html formatting

    and say OK.

You will get the entire data as it is.

I tried your link. Have uploaded the sheet... let me know if it was of any use.
