"Leapfrogging" in lists???

  • I am a sportswriter and I am making a ratings system for area high school teams....I've got everything set up in my spreadsheet except this - in my ratings system teams are ranked upon their score in the ratings formula, lower being better, but if a team who has beaten the second team in head to head competition and is rated behind the second team by x (i haven't decided yet) or less number of points, the first team will "leapfrog" the second team in the rankings (but not in the ratings). Later in the season the first tema may fall too far behind the second team to qualify for the "leapfrog".

Ex. Wilcox Central beats Thomasville, but is still behingd in the ratings, but only by 5, low enough to qualify for the leapfrog. So Wilcox Central will jump to one spot ahead of Thomasville in the rankings. Later after Wilcox Central loses to Dallas County, they fall behind Thomasville by 15, too much to qualify for leapfrog, so the rankings stay the same. Make Sense??

    Will someone please help me??

  • Hi Sedso,

Saw your cry for help but am a little pressed for time at present.

As a suggestion and in order to assist others with your enquiry could you please attach a copy of the spreadsheet that you need help with (if not to sensitive).

This just give them a better visual of what your trying to achieve.

If I can frre up some time I'll try to look at it myself.

    Thanks

  • Sedso,

Please only post the each request once. Posting multiple entries of the same thing will not get faster answers but will fill up the board unnecessarily.

What you are asking for is a little more than a function, more like an entire logic system. You have not provided enough info in your post to really get stuck into it.

Can a team only leapfrog a team it has beaten? If so........

What if there is a team in between them yet all 3 teams lie withing the leapfrogging margin?

Have you set up a table that stores all the results so head to head comparisons can be made?

    Please post back.

  • Sedso,

Not enough data to formulate a system.

How does the sreadsheet know that Thomasville beat Wilcox?

All that is in the example is a bunch of random facts with no clue as to how they were arrived at.
You say that you want only the rankings, not the score to change but in the example the Thomasville despite losing not only leapfrogs Dallas County but has its score changed???

    Could you provide clearer explanation

  • In my example the second little list is just to show that you can fall to far behind later in the season to jump ahead of the other team. You can jump any number of teams because in order to jump the teams they all must be within x number of points, a relatively small number, so though on the exterior it may appear that you are jumping a ton but because all the team are realtively close it isn't really that big of a jump.

In my spreadsheet I have an area where you type in teams opponent s for each week, called Schedule PreSeason, then as that week comes you paste the teams for that week to the area where the formulas use their references from, called Schedules during season. You then go to the Info area for that week and type W or L for each team.

I've attached a spreadsheet thats for college teams, its still not all the way done but youll get the idea.

    Thanks for any help
