Calculate the freqeuncy of drawing a pair from a card deck ?

  • Hi there !

Were trying to calculate the frequency (in percent) of getting a pair (two aces for example) when drawing two cards off a deck. I don't think I got it right, anyone here able to show me how it shall be done in excel ?

    Cheers

    Thank You.
Could you please explain why you calculated as you did. At this point I can't see how the calculation works :(

Hmm, the 4 represent the numbers of aces in the first draw and 3 represent the numbers of aces in the second draw, 52 and 51 are the numbers of cards in the deck before the first draw and after the first draw. What I don't get is why multiply 4 and 3 and divide it with the multiplication of 52 and 51.
I found another way to put it to get the same result; (4/52)*(3/51). I find this way of calculating it easier to read ;).
How would the calculation look if I draw three cards instead of two but I am still only interested in the frequency of a ace pair appearing (would like to see the different between that one and a pair of kings too) ?

Sorry for the late reply. I am off during weekends. You are right. To get the probability that you will get three aces on three picks, the formula is
    =(4*3*2)/(52*51*50)
This is the short cut formula which you can never find in any books. The books uses a formula which is makes a person dull (spoon feeding). Here, you just create a formula base on mere reasons.

To get a pair of kings at two pick, same formula as =(4*3)/(52*51)
