cells displaying formulas rather than results

  • I've been using excel for years, but have only recently begun experiencing this problem. In altering formulas, cells suddenly refuse to display the result. They'll display only the formula itself. This has happened on a number of formulas of varying complexity and is not affected by the ~ toggle.
Nor are entire sheets affected, only specific cells.
The most recent example of this was this evening on a sheet using a very simple sum formula. The original formula was =sum(b2:b100). When the range was extended to b2:b400, the cell would display only the formula. When I reverted to the original range, the result displayed.
And for the record, there is currently no data in the extended range, I simply extended it in anticipation of the need.

This has been a bit of a problem for several months now and I'd appreciate any insight. (a solution would also be nice :)

    thanks for the suggestion.
I checked, but View|Formulas is unchecked. And as I said, it isn't even an entire spreadsheet that this effects, but apparently random formulas within any given spreadsheet.
I'm just dying to know what's causing it, and game to try any other suggestions for resolving it.

    Kwinbo,

I doubt this is your issue but you may want to check the formatting for those problem cells. I have had this happen when a cell was changed to "Text". If this is the case, I would select "General" form the formatting menu and you may need to re-enter the formula.

:duh: okay, I feel like a fool, but yes, that was it. simple! geez.
interesting, though, that I've only recently begun experiencing this problem.

Thanks, though, def. no more pulling my hair.
