Is there a way to make the chart point into a letter e.g. if I want to plot (23, 44) for person AD and (27,48) for person BF on a chart and have the points come up as AD and BF on the chartr instead of dots etc?

1) Create your chart showing points
2) right click on one of the points to show the Format Data Series option
3) under the Data Labels Tab - choose "show label'
4) under the Patterns Tab - choose 'Line-none' and 'Marker-none'
As Egad suggests, but also center the labels. See the attached example (Egad respoinded while I was building the example, but rather than discarding it, I'll post it).

If the chart is an xy scatter then displaying data labels will only result in either the X or the Y value being displayed.
In order to link the data labels with extra text you could use either of these free addins.
