Why is it the when the Filter mode is on it sometimes gives the number of records that is being filtered and sometimes it says "filter mode" or "ready".
Does the Excel program itself have a limit as to what is displayed on the status bar?

Hi bearcub,
"Ready" is displayed when there is no filter in effect (i.e. all the records are displayed)
"X of Y records found" is displayed when you have a filter selected to show how many were in the list
"Filter Mode" shows after one or more filter conditions are in effect and you click on one of the dropdown arrows.

Thank you.
I guess I didn't phrase the question properly.
Yesterday a co-worker showed two different files which had two different results. They both used a filter.
In the smaller file which had less than 1000 records, it showed X 0f Y being displayed.
In the larger file, which contained in excess of 1000 records, the status bar did not display X of Y records. Instead it just said Filter Mode.
I thought that this was bizarre and did several different filters.
Do you know of any situation why the status bar would use the X of Y concept?
thanks
Haven't seen that one before.
I've got a large file (>25,000 records) and whenever a filter is active, the status bar shows "x of y records found" The only time I see "Filter Mode" is either when I click on a dropdown arrow and/or click back into the spreadsheet without making a filter selection.
Maybe others have seen something like you are getting and will post an idea.

The status bar is not dynamic. When the filter is applied you will get the 10 of 3000 message. That stays until something else puts up a message. When one of the dropdown arrows is clicked the status bar displays Filter Mode. If no new choice is made, that message stays until something else puts something in the status bar.

Could you explain this a little further. I am still somewhat confused:
"When the filter is applied you will get the 10 of 3000 message. That stays until something else puts up a message. When one of the dropdown arrows is clicked the status bar displays Filter Mode. "
I thought that to activate the filter, one of the dropdown had to be activated.
When the dropdown is activated and a selection made, you get the 10 of 3000 message. When the dropdown is activated but no new selection made, then the Filter Mode stays in the status bar. Try it and see.
Actually, my co-worker said that if you are filtering a list that contains only formulas then the x of y message doesn't come.
When he turned these formulas into values it then showed the message.
I guess my question was rather vague. It was this situation to which I was referring.
