I have page number in my footer on one of my word documents. It sais "page x of x" (x = page number). It looks fine on the computer screen as it sais "page 1 of 2" on the first page, "page 2 of 2" on the second page. BUT when I print out the document, it sais "page 1 of 1" on the first page and "page 2 of 2" on the second page. Why is that? I want the page numbers to be correct. Can anyone help me, please?

I duplicated your problem without any trouble. Figuring out what caused the dilemna was fun!
I am attaching the file that I used. The culprit seems to be a hard return (Ctrl + enter). I had originally used that to get two pages. The footer behaved as you described.
Changing the number format from the header footer toolbar to Start at 1 (from continue from previous section) didn't fix the problem. My next thought was to delete the hard return and fill page 1 with text until I had two "real" pages. Once I did this the footer reacted like you would want it to (ie. 1 of 2, 2 of 2 in the document, print preview, and hard copy).
Without knowing how complex your document is, this may not be the final fix, but it should give a head's up on where to start.

Brandtrock! I remember you helping me with my Excel problem... thank you for helping me again. The bad news is that it still doesn't seem to work. I have different kinds of documents and it will do the same thing on every one of them. I have page breaks in some of them and no page breaks on others. It always shows the right pages (page 1 of 2 on the first page; page 2 of 2 on the second page) on the computer screen. But as soon as I print the document, the footer sais "page 1 of 1" on the first page; "page 2 of 2" on the second one. Maybe I didn't understand your instructions correctly :redface:

This will take two posts as I have two different attachments for you:cool:.
The first is your file reset so that the footers show, preview, and print correctly. I am holding copies hot off my printer with Page 1 of 2 and Page 2 of 2 in the footer while I type this. Okay, the sheets are actually on the desk WHILE I type.
The second attachment (in the next post) is print screens in a Word document showing and telling what I did to your file. Let me know if you have questions.

You may need to go to the footer and select the Insert Auto Text button and replace the footer in any other documents you have that behave like this. I replaced them with the Page X of Y option in the reset footer-pagenumbers file.

I appreciate your efforts to help me. I am so sorry, but I have to tell you that it still won't work. It does the same thing as in the beginning. It shows the page numbers correctly on the computer screen, but as soon as I print them, it will say 1of1 on the first page and 2of2 on the second one. I have no idea what to do.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. For some reason it looks to me like it was a printer setting, but I can't figure it out. It's weird anyway. I think there must be a way to fix it. I will keep trying, too. Thanks again :flirt:

This is really weird.
Svenjafour - after reading this, please see if it behaves this way on yours as well.
I am attaching a partial scan of the sheets I printed out. As you will see, the 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 printed correctly. The bizarre part is that this only works right when the footer is selected.
If I printed after double clicking in the footer or header, then I got the expected result (ie. 1 of 2, 2 of 2). If I printed while the header and footer weren't in edit mode I would get the annoying result (ie. 1 of 1, 2 of 2).
Try as I might, I cannot figure out why Word is doing this. If anyone else has an idea, please let post it up.
Sorry about the poor quality scan. I originally attached the view of the whole sheet but it made the post very very wide and I thought better of it.
The smaller version of the scan is the same quality as the larger version but at least you don't have to scroll all over creation to see it. :lol:

I've been following this thread with equal mystification. The light suddenly dawned, I think.
Go to FILE > PAGE SETUP > LAYOUT > and change "Section Start" from "New Page" to "Continuous"
I think I tried that already, but let me see again as soon as I get to work. I will let you guys know if it works. Thank you all
ok, it still does the same thing. No matter if I select "start with 1" or if I select "continuous"... :puzzled: :puzzled:

this is weird... I just got a brandnew DELL computer today (with flat screen and such, but that's beside the point) and I printed a two page document. Guess what... it didn't do the silly "page 1 of 1 on the first page and page 2 of 2 on the second page" anymore. I wonder what was wrong with my last computer. I could swear it must have been some kind of a wrong setting. But anyway, now it works the way it should and I'll probably never find out why...
