on a certain file, i would like to surpress this message (the displays on opening) and accept the prompt "don't update"...?

try this

if there is no data to be linked from other workbook

eidit-links
change the source to the same workbook.
save the workbook.

No;w close the workbook and open again and see whetehr that alert comes upl
