I've read up about lakh separators - a bit weird to an Englishman! Can you give some examples of true values in the cell and how you would like the cell to look?

Hmmm, I don't think it can be done - Excel changes whatever custom format I put in. You could use VBA to change it, or you use the TEXT function in another cell to give you what you want, and perhaps hide the original cell.

in India lakh is numerical value for 100,000
So everyone use it as 1,00,000 not as 100,000 (one hundred thousands)
another value crore would mean 10,000,000
but it is used as 1,00,00,000 (one hundred lakhs)
