• This is hard to explain. I have two rows, one row with 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 in each column and, for example, a value in column 2 4 6 and 8. I want to return a value, ideally in an array in one cell, that contains the column numbers (2 4 6 8) that contain values. So, I want to return each value that has a value in a different row below the top row. I hope this makes sense.

Also, is there a way to return a value that tells how many cells contain data within an array, or group of cells?

Thanks guys! If this doesn't make sense, please let me know.

  • Hi

Use COUNT if you're just counting numerical values, use COUNTA if you wanted to include cell that may contain text

Listing the Cell Addresses that contain data in One cell would require some VBA coding, I do not know of a way you could do that with a formula. Perhaps you could explain a bit more about why you need to list the cell locations....

    Regards ,

    Will

  • I couldn't see your formula, but i'm familiar with counta. Maybe include the formula for what you did in the text here.

I've included a jpg showing what i would actually like to return in a cell. I plan on using VBA to export a text file when done puting together the info, so some VBA coding would be ok too. Please let me know any ideas or thoughts. Thanks!

I actually don't remember how to post a file or image...Please help.

  • =COUNT(A2:H2)
    or
    =COUNTA(A2:H2)

Attachments are not working at the moment - sorry

If you click on I2 in the HTML image in my post you should be able to see the formula.

There are a number of posts here on the forum relating to saving data as a text file, try a search to see if any of the previous posts help you.... without more than a currently pretty vague description of what you are trying to do it's difficult to give you more than this rather vague answer i'm afraid.

    Regards,

    Will

  • Ok, here it is:

    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
    25 35 25 35

    i want to return [2.0,4.0,6.0,8.0]

the value in the second row doesn't matter, i just needs to return the column number in row 1 if there is a value in row 2 in the same column. I want it in the form shown above. Does that help more?

    Thanks for taking the time...

    Dave...

Will, are you on yahoo messenger. I'm dave_us. I'd appreciate your help.

  • Dave,

I got quite close having a play around with formulas.... sent you a file.

Added formulas in A3:H3 as follows

    A3 formula
    =IF(ISBLANK(A2),"",TEXT(A1,"#,##0.00")&",")

    copy this across to H3

    then in I2 placed
    ="["&A3&B3&C3&D3&E3&F3&G3&H3&"]"

    result

    [2.00,4.00,6.00,8.00,]

    Does this help?

    Will

  • We are getting closer. Where did you send a file? This is great, now, is there a way we can eliminate the last comma in the series of numbers next to the bracket so that it reads [2.0,4.0,6.0,8.0]??? This would be great if we could figure this out. I appreciate all your help Will. Thanks!

  • Cool,

How about this then.... in cell I3

    =LEFT("["&A3&B3&C3&D3&E3&F3&G3&H3,LEN(I2)-1)&"]"

in my example, this gives a result of

    [2.00,4.00,6.00,8.00]

BTW I sent the file to your email address that you specified in your profile.

    Will

  • i get a #value error. What are you referencing in cell I2? There is nothing there.

That is great, but i need this to be dynamic. If i don't have a value, for instance in the 8 column, say my last one is 4, I need it to return [2.0,4.0]. It has to remove the comma from the last entry is what i'm trying to say. Give it some thought.

Like i said before, if you have a better idea using vba, let's talk about it.

I got the email. I forgot I changed it. Thanks by the way. Do you have a yahoo messenger acct? If so, give me your user id.

    Thanks Will!

  • You got it. That's it. I learn so much from you guys. Thank you so much!

So...is there an easier way to do this in vba cause eventually i want this to all occur in a vba code. I'm just trying to keep you guys on your toes. Thanks for all the help!

Ummmmmm....See my previous post!!!... I'm referencing the result of the formula in I2... Have you even read and tried to test any of my free help thus far?

Have you even tried my suggestion ???

It works whether there is one value or 8 values... now I'd call that dynamic!

this formula in I3 (referencing the original attampt in I2) does remove the final comma

    =LEFT("["&A3&B3&C3&D3&E3&F3&G3&H3,LEN(I2)-2)&"]"

    Please try it....

    Will

  • WOW!!!

Of course i'm trying it. What do you think i'm doing here? Would i have follow up questions to your posts if I wasn't trying it??????

I didn't understand that you were still incorporating the previous eq. in I2. That being the case, it works fine, but I didn't understand that. Sorry...

There's no need to get all defrosted...

I really appreciate your help. I don't know why you're getting all dramatic in your post. Communication sometimes isn't the most clear through posts...

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! I DO REALLY APPRECIATE IT AND I HAVE BEEN DOING THE THINGS YOU HAVE SUGGESTED. There was just some missunderstanding.

Yes Will, that is dynamic. :)

  • I agree...he's been a huge help. He just got all upset all of a sudden like i wasn't listening to what he was saying. Quite the contrary. I've been doing everything, but i didn't pick up on a little detail and I got that post...

  • Sorry Dave - just ignore me.... I Don't usually get all heated over such a small issue.

Nothing to do with hangovers Brandtrock... probably more to do with the :baby2: who kept me up all night last night with her teeth  .... maybe I should steer clear of the forum when i get no sleep....

So how's it looking now... I'll ry to take a look at something coded over the weekend if I get the chance OK.... Did yu mean you got the email? If so, could you send it me back as I sent it from work & now at home till monday.

    Thanks & no worries

    Will

  • Don't sweat it! I really appreciate all your help and will likely contact you again for some more. You guys here impress me.

I'll email you back the file as you asked for the vba stuff. I'll look forward to hearing what you came up with.

    Thanks again Will!!!!!

Completely understandable Will. I have been without much computer access for the last three weeks. Glad to be back in a position to check back more regularly.

BTW My wife and I didn't communicate well on the Tooth Fairy when our oldest son lost his first tooth. He had swallowed the tooth while eating a cookie and therefore, nothing was under the pillow to extract when I put his money under it. My wife went into his room later and slid his money under his pillow again!! Man are these teeth costing me a fortune as they come out.
