How do I restore Lost Macros?

  • Question from user; Since the changes were made to my computer, none of my macros in Excel work. Can you put them back for me please?

I did nothing to her system that I know of. Can anyone give me a clue on where the Macro's are stored?

    Thanks,
    ~Gig

  • Gig,

are you certain that Excels default security has not been set to Maximum. This will prevent Macros from running and will not ask if you want them enabled.

    To check this:
    TOOLS (menu)
    OPTIONS (menu)
    SECURITY (tab)
    MACRO SECURITY (button)

  • Neither one of these suggestions worked, but I do have some more information that should be useful.

When she opens an Excel spreadsheet it opens another copy of Excel with the file title "Personal.xls"

    Her Personal.xls file lives in "C:\Documents and Settings\CThompson\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART"

Her Macro Security is set to "Low".

When she tries to use a macro she gets an error message that states:
"The file could not be accessed. Try one of the following:
Make sure the specified file exists.
Make sure the folder that contains the file is not read only.
    Make sure the file name does not contain any of the following character's: < > ? [ ] : PERSONAL.XLS or *
Make sure the file/path name doesn't contain more than 218 characters.

    end

One more tid bit of information.

Just before this started I installed "Office XP Add-in Remove Hidden data", "rhdtool.exe".

    Does this help?

    Thanks,
    ~Gig

  • Sounds like she has two Personal.xls files.

    Check in

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\XLStart

I suspect that her original Personal.xls is there.
